Driving to Mexico With Pets – Lost in Puerto Vallarta

While the high-profile disappearance and discovery of a Texas teen in Mexico have pointed a great deal of attention to the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta, another traveler accompanied the teen and his mother during their trip south of the border. In addition, a relative offered a reward for returning the family’s dog, which disappeared after being separated from the pair on the night of their detention. If you plan to travel with your pet, it is essential to be familiar with the rules, carrying the necessary veterinary documentation for efficient border crossing. You should also take documentation for your Mexican insurance for cars. You can print your proof of Mexican auto insurance for a vacation after paying online.

Entry with a Pet

You will need an official copy of your pet’s vaccination record to prove that your animal is protected against both distemper and rabies. Your pet must have received these vaccines at least 15 days in advance of your crossing. Additionally, your veterinarian needs to issue an International Certificate of Good Health. Be sure that the paperwork is legible.

You may not have to show these papers during your entry but always be prepared with legally required documentation. This includes your passports and your Mexican insurance for cars, in addition to veterinary documentation. It is unlikely that the authorities would hold your animal in quarantine upon entry into the country with the proper documentation. However, the loss of your documents could affect your departure.

Returning to the United States

More extended stays may have different requirements. Especially so if your pet’s vaccines are due before you leave for the U.S. again. Vaccination must have been administered within the last 12 months and at least one month before crossing the border. The authorities could require quarantine if vaccination were administered less than 30 days prior.

Your Mexican insurance for cars could also lapse during your travel. For example, if you were in Mexico for an extended period, you would benefit from long-term Mexican auto insurance for vacation. However, suppose your coverage lapses, and you don’t buy another Mexican insurance for cars. In that case, you will be at risk of legal problems and severe financial obligations in case of an accident.

If your pets like dogs and cats are three months old or less, you cannot enter them legitimately to Mexico. And if you lack Mexican insurance, neither can you enter Mexico.
