Senor Mex Says: This post hit the nail on the head in more ways than one. First of all, the point about U.S. insurance policies being invalid south of the border is right on the money. This fact doesn’t just apply to the U.S. though, the same thing is true about Canadian car insurance policies, which are valid in the States but not down in Mexico. Confusing, right? It is true that neither type of policy is officially recognized down in Mexico. If you end up in an accident and show the authorities your U.S. car insurance policy, they will shrug and ask to see your Mexico insurance. In rare instances, U.S. or Canadian insurance may provide limited coverage within a very small zone right along the border. There are so many caveats involved here, though, that its always best to protect yourself with an honest to goodness Mexico insurance policy anyway.
The other point that I wanted to discuss from this post involves international driving permits. While they can provide benefits, they are nowhere near as important as car insurance for Mexico. An international driving permit is truly optional; there is no direct benefit involved in buying or keeping this type of permit on you. Im not quite sure what it even has to do with Car Insurance for Mexico or why it was included in this post, to be perfectly honest. To avoid confusion, it would be better to include this information in a separate post.
Excerpt
“‘Many people are not aware that U.S. auto insurance is not valid in Mexico, said AAA Northern California spokesperson Cynthia Harris. ‘Only a Mexican automobile liability policy issued by an authorized Mexican insurance company is accepted by local authorities.'”
“If you are planning on driving in Mexico, you may want to purchase an International Driving Permit. Valid in more than 150 countries, the permit contains your name, photo, and translated driver license information, effectively communicating to foreign officials that you are an authorized driver.”
Read the whole California Auto Insurance post here. Avoid confusion by always purchasing Mexico insurance before you drive down to Mexico. Car Insurance for Mexico by Mexican Insurance Store is a thousand times more important than an international driving permit, which may not provide any real benefits to people who visit Mexico.
