Because Mexico is a modern mix of indigenous peoples, Spanish descendants, and many other ethnic backgrounds, this holiday means a lot to the Mexican people, just like the U.S. Independence Day on July 4th!  Mexicans were first visited by the Spaniards in 1521 when explorer, Hernan Cortes, arrived with an army of 500. From almost 300 years, the native peoples and the locals who built their fortunes in Mexico were affected by Spanish rule.

Today, in Mexican lands, you can expect a great party! For example, cities will be all decked out for the celebration on September 16. The Mexican people know how to commemorate the day in 1810 when patriots Father Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende, Dona Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez and others called everyone to fight for independence in a little church.

A typical liberty celebration begins the day before when Mexican people begin to gather in traditional dress in the common center of their town, or the zocalo. The music starts up with the traditional mariachi bands, and the preparations begin for a fabulous celebration the following day.

Also on the holiday, the national president of Mexico will go to the top of the National Palace, the Palacio Nacional, and ring the bell, or grito (the call), that was once rung by Father Hidalgo. When the party begins and you hear the locals yell, “Viva, Mexico!” you know you have participated in a national custom.

An independence experience transcends time and place and national borders. When you share the joy and love of country with Mexican patriots, you will leave with a lasting memory of a country with a long and complex heritage.

And don’t forget a great party with people, dancing, food, street games, and the chance to wear your sombrero!
