Is Mexican Car Insurance Coverage Required for All Vehicles?
If you’re going to drive a car with American or Canadian plates into Mexico, you will need to buy Mexican car insurance coverage. Some folks will tell you to wait until you’re at the border, but you’ll pay a premium for doing that. Much better rates and deals are available online. One thing you may be wondering is whether the type of vehicle you drive matters or not. Let’s make this as simple as possible: Mexico auto insurance protection, is required because you must take “financial responsibility” to motor in Mexico whether you drive an SUV, a minivan, a pickup truck, or any other type of vehicle. There are no exceptions to buying Mexican car insurance coverage unless you want to pay cash for any damages you cause.
Sedans, Convertibles, and Station Wagons
Do you drive a sedan, convertible, or station wagon? If so, you’re going to need quality Mexico auto insurance protection. You need to get a policy no matter what kind of car you drive. That’s true whether you’ll be going alone, or if you will be driving with several passengers. Keep in mind, though, that you only need a single policy for one vehicle. In other words, there’s no need for each driver to buy their policy. With that in mind, you shouldn’t have to spend very much money at all.
Trucks, Crossovers, and Minivans
Driving a truck, crossover, or minivan is a great way to get everyone down to Mexico cheaply. You could even drive a full-size van if you’d like. However, regardless of the type of auto you drive to Mexico, you will need a certificate showing proper Mexico auto insurance protection. Without that slip of paper, you could find yourself in jail in the aftermath of a car accident. Unfortunately, it happens to people all the time, including those who drive vans, minivans, crossovers, and SUVs. So don’t push the envelope; stay safe with the right car insurance policy.
RVs
Traveling by RV is an excellent idea if you’d like to save even more money while you’re down in Mexico. Just make sure to get valid Mexican car insurance coverage for your RV. The same rules apply. If you can’t show the cops that you have coverage, they will have to detain you until you complete their investigation. That can sometimes take a long time. You can imagine what a damper it would put on your fun-filled Mexican vacation, so make sure to get the coverage you need well before you leave.
