In Mexico, there are only two grades of gasoline, premium (92 octane) and magna, which is the equivalent of regular unleaded. Because a vehicle is stopped and its occupants most likely will exit the vehicle, going to a gas station, regardless of location or country, provides opportunities for vehicular theft or robbery. Before visiting any service station and turning off the engine, give the place a brief, visual once-over. It anything at all makes you feel uneasy, go to the next gas station. For this reason alone, plan on refueling long before the gas gauge is on empty.  This will allow drivers plenty of time to choose the service station that is right for their comfort levels.

After finding a safe-feeling gas station, be sure to place all valuables in a locked compartment. If needing to use the restroom, secure all doors and make sure even a single peso is not visible. Since this will be your first time using the location’s restroom facilities, it is better to be safe than sorry; so use the buddy system. All male and female passengers should use the facilities at the same time. Heterosexual couples traveling by themselves should wait outside the male and female restrooms for their partners. Being cautious can only ensure both you and your travel companion’s safety needs are met.

Finally, before pumping gas or having it pumped for you, make sure you are getting the correct amount you are charged. Look to see that your pump has been reset to zero and is in proper working order. Monitor the pumping process and you can rest assured both your vehicle and wallet will be satisfied.
