People inadvertently break the law while visiting Mexico all the time. One of the most common problems is heading south of the border without Mexican auto insurance. For one reason or another, many travelers are unaware of the fact that Mexican insurance by Mexican Insurance Store is required by law. Others know that they technically need insurance for Mexico but choose not to buy it. This isn’t a situation in which you’ll get a slap on the wrist for not having coverage. After an accident, you’ll be asked for your Mexican auto insurance policy. If you don’t have Mexican insurance, the police will cart you away to jail. There will be no ifs, ands or buts.

Yes, Car insurance for Mexico is the Law

There’s some debate out there about whether or not Mexican auto insurance is actually required by law. The main point of contention is that the law does not expressly single out Mexican insurance as being a requirement. What it does say is that every driver must be able to handle his or her financial responsibilities in the aftermath of an accident. The best and easiest way to do that is by having Car insurance for Mexico. In fact, there’s no other clear way in which to prove that you can make good on the money that is owed. That is why everyone who drives in Mexico needs this coverage.

Do the Police Check for Insurance?

Another reason that people are often confused about Mexican auto insurance is because they aren’t asked for it while they’re at the border. Customs agents don’t need to see copies of Mexican insurance policies. They couldn’t care less if you decide to proceed into the country without coverage. That does not mean that you don’t need to buy it though. The same situation arises if you’re pulled over for speeding or stopped at a military checkpoint. You won’t be asked for insurance for Mexico in those situations, but you still need it.

Stay Out of Jail

The only thing that could make getting into an accident even worse would be to end up behind bars. That could easily happen if you choose to head into Mexico without the right coverage. The risks are simply too great for it to be worthwhile to go without insurance. Furthermore, it’s not like Mexican auto insurance is extremely expensive. You don’t have to leave home to buy it because it’s available online. On all counts, there’s never a good reason to go without it and plenty of reasons to always have it. It is required by law for anyone driving in Mexico to have Mexican insurance cover as this will enable every driver to handle his/her financial responsibly in case of an accident. It is therefore advisable to acquire a Mexican insurance policy for your car or you might get jailed for not having one.

If the incurred accident was not your liability, creating a reliable police report will hold the other person responsible for the injury and settling of damages.
