Mexico is Different and So Is Mexican Insurance!

Senor Mex Says: Hello! This is an interesting question. It’s one that people ask a lot of the time too. People get pretty confused about the situation because the laws are different from one country to the next. If you go to Mexico, you absolutely must have special Mexican insurance. If you live in the U.S. and are going up to Canada, though, your regular car insurance policy will suffice. Your everyday car insurance will become void when you cross the border into Mexico, which is why a special Mexican Insurance policy is needed. The main reason for this discrepancy has to do with the fact that the laws are so different in Mexico. There, you will be treated guilty until you are proven innocent. Whether you are responsible for an accident or not, you need to show that you can handle your financial obligations. The police will demand to see your Mexican insurance policy, which is why you need to have it with you at all times. You need a separate Mexican Insurance policy as well. An attachment wont insure you.

  • Insurance cover is as good as the country’s laws. Mexico is no exception. Thought there are close ties between Mexico, US and Canada, with US or Canadian insurance cover, you can safely drive in either countries but not in Mexico.

Short-term policy can be bought online. Even for a single day, no problem. Anyone can pick any duration of days he will stay in Mexico. Be sensible in choosing your policy.
